About Midwest by the Mile
There was a time I thought I had to leave the Midwest to find beauty, excitement, and meaning in travel. So I did what any restless 18-year-old would do—I ran as far as I could, all the way to Scotland for college. I explored ancient castles, wandered cobblestone streets, and soaked up every bit of culture I could find.
And I swore I’d never come back.
But life has a funny way of rerouting you. At 27, I landed back in my hometown of Urbana, Illinois—dragging my heels the whole way. And somehow, between long drives through cornfields, small-town diners with pie that actually made me tear up, and the soft magic of golden-hour light across a two-lane road… I fell in love with the Midwest for the first time.
Why I Started This Midwest Travel Blog
I created Midwest by the Mile to celebrate what I once overlooked: the slow, scenic, quietly magical places right here in the heart of the country.
Whether you’re planning a quick escape from St. Louis (my current home base!) or dreaming of a long, meandering road trip through Missouri, Illinois, or Iowa, this blog is your starting point. I share weekend getaway ideas, curated itineraries, and personal travel stories from across the Midwest—all rooted in real experiences and a deep love of local charm.
This is a place for cozy B&Bs, tiny diners that serve up life-changing biscuits, and scenic drives that leave you speechless. It’s about discovering the best small towns in the Midwest—not just the most famous ones.
Meet Addie

Hi! I’m Addie—a travel writer, content strategist, and occasional breakfast-for-dinner evangelist. I’ve explored more than 25 countries, but the Midwest has slowly, stubbornly, and completely stolen my heart.
Now based in St. Louis, I spend most weekends on the road discovering hidden gems, hiking forest trails, browsing antique shops, and seeking out the best pies and patios the region has to offer.
Ready to Hit the Road?
